Tricks to Make the Most of Remote Work

Hey All,

I hope you’re having a great week and getting set for some time off around the holidays!

This week I’m wrapping things up early for holidays and for a surprise family trip to somewhere warm! It’s our first time surprising our kids with something like this and I’m excited for tomorrow( or today depending when you read this) to tell the kids they don’t have school and that we’re going to hop on a plane to get away! :)

As a heads up, I’ll still be posting on Twitter if you’d like to follow along, and keeping up with the newsletter, though there may be a break for the holidays for new videos on the channel (who knows though, I may post a few from wherever we may be…).

That being said, let’s jump into today’s newsletter.

Subscribe to the Design X Technology newsletter to get weekly tips/advice to stay current in the AEC and Design industry!

Quick Tip:

Continuing with last weeks email about Troubleshooting and Problem-Solving in AutoCAD, I wanted to share one of my favorite videos and honestly maybe one of the most helpful when you’re dealing with difficult and slow drawings. Particularily if you’re planning to take advantage of the Remote Working Tips later in today’s email! (Small and clean files are a lifesaver when working over remote networks ;) )

Learning and regularity using commands like AUDIT, RECOVER, PURGE, and more that we learn in the video is the Easiest way to impress coworker and keep your drawings running smoothly!

Feature: How To Make the Most of Remote Work

With our family getting ready and just about to leave for vacation I wanted to share some methods and tips I’ve learned over the years to make the most out of our ability as designers and engineers to Work Remotely!

Remote work has been a common topic and job perks over the last few years, but many of us still don't fully realize or take advantage of the freedom and opportunity comes with it!

With more and more companies embracing at least some remote or hybrid work forms I wanted to share some of the ways we can make the most of Remote Working, highlighting some of the specific options we have along with the pros, cons, and examples/recommendations for each.

1. The Work From Home:

Likely what most of us think about when the topic of remote work comes up is the more appropriately named "work from home" arrangement.

Typically includes a dedicated home office space consisting or multiple monitors, keyboard/mouse, desk and ergonomic chair.

Pros include: No commute, more freedom of schedule, coffee/lunch from home or local options, generally very cost-saving, more family/friend time and flexibility of being home to do minor tasks throughout the day as needed (do some dishes, laundry, yard work, etc.. on lunches/in between tasks, if you have kids this can be a game changer for pickup/drop offs/childcare etc..

Cons include: Can be Lonely/Isolating if you don't proactively plan to socialize (Join the CAD Support Community) through remote methods (teams chats, group chats, video calls, coffee meetups, etc..), generally still tied to a specific location, depending on arrangement can still be expected to come into the office if local

While this may be the most common remote work type it's far from the most exciting or advantageous use of the situation. However, as mentioned above, if you have kids/family this can move a job from OK to one of the best ways to be more involved with your kids while still working full-time and remaining in the same town. It also has the opportunity to work for a company located in a different city, state, or country assuming they are open to hiring fully remote employees.

2. The Work from "Vacation":

Typically accomplished in combination with one of the other remote types. With careful planning and some sacrifices, you can use this method to practically gain unlimited "vacation" time.
